About Nu

On February 23, 1891, ten men decided to organize Pi Kappa Alpha in the bell tower of Old Main on Wofford College’s campus and received the Nu Chapter Charter from Robert Adger Smythe, becoming the 13th chapter in the United States. After a decree from the Wofford board of trustees in 1906, all social fraternities were outlawed on campus. Nu chapter officially disbanded at Wofford College but remained active as an underground chapter. It was not until 1951 that several students expressed a desire to officially revive its charter and reestablish Nu Chapter here at Wofford. The original chapter house was built in 1954 and served as a location for social events, chapter meetings, and other gatherings. Since that time 132 years ago, Pi Kappa Alpha at Wofford has grown energetically each year, to become one of the most outstanding fraternities on the campus. Several awards hang in the house, recognizing Nu Chapter's excellence throughout the Carolinas Region of Pi Kappa Alpha Chapters, as well as the other fraternities on Wofford's campus.
